Placeit.com Review - Expert Tried & Tested

Placeit is a go-to for all sorts of mockups, especially for those in the ecommerce business. The unlimited subscription is particularly cost-effective, offering a wide range of design options without breaking the bank.

In all honesty, Placeit isn't without its limitations. While it excels in mockups and basic design elements, it falls short in the logo creation sector. The logos often lack the finesse and customization that you might require for a unique brand identity. For videos and other types of digital creatives, I'd recommend a different platform, which you will find out about shortly.

What Is Placeit?

Placeit user interface

Is It Worth It?

Placeit offers an unlimited subscription for $7.47 per month, which is a reasonable price point for those who need mockups and basic designs for their brands. The platform excels in this area, providing a wide range of templates that can be used even for commercial purposes. However, when it comes to video, logo and some social media content, I cannot praise it the same.

As I said above, I personally do not think Placeit is worth it unless you only intend to purchase individual assets from the site, otherwise you can just get an Envato Elements subscription for around about the same price (depending on plan type).

Pros

  • Ease of Use: Placeit is known for its user-friendly interface. Everything happens in the browser, and there's no software to download. This makes it accessible for users who may not have design experience.
  • Quick Professional Results: You can create something that looks professional in just a few minutes. This is particularly useful for small businesses and individual creators who may not have the time or resources to spend on complex design software.
  • Variety of Templates: Placeit offers thousands of apparel, video, and graphic design templates. This wide range of options allows users to find something that suits their specific needs.
  • Affordable Pricing: Placeit offers an Unlimited Subscription for $14.95 a month or $99.95 a year. This gives you unlimited access to all of Placeit’s design templates, video templates, mockups, and logo makers. They also offer a 'pay as you go' option for single purchases, with prices like $7.95 for mockups and $2.95 for design templates.
  • High Customer Ratings: Placeit has received an average rating of 8.75/10 based on various criteria such as value for money, ease of use, features, and customer support.
  • Free Trial Available: Placeit offers a free trial that allows you to test all of its tools. This is a great way to assess the platform's capabilities before committing financially. The free trial can give you a quantitative measure of how many designs or mockups you can realistically create in a given time frame.
  • Logo Making Tools: Placeit has an easy-to-use logo maker priced at $39.95 per logo. If you're a small business owner looking to create a unique logo without hiring a designer, this is a cost-effective option. The tool can save you hundreds of dollars compared to professional design services.
  • Video Mockups and Templates: The platform offers video mockups and single videos for $9.95 each. This is particularly useful for businesses looking to create promotional videos without the need for video editing skills. Given that freelance video editing can cost upwards of $50 an hour, this is a cost-effective solution for basic video needs.
  • Community Ratings: Placeit has a high community rating of 4.8/5 based on 22 reviews on Product Hunt. This high rating indicates a strong level of customer satisfaction and can serve as a quantitative measure of its reliability and performance.
  • Time-Saving: Given that you can create a professional-looking design in just a few minutes, you can quantify the time saved compared to using more complex software or hiring a professional. For small businesses, time is often as valuable as money, and saving hours on design work can be a significant advantage.
  • No Design Experience Required: The platform is designed so that you don't need any Photoshop or design experience. This lowers the entry barrier for many users, making it accessible to virtually anyone who wants to create basic designs.
  • Frequent Updates and New Templates: Placeit regularly updates its library of templates and tools, ensuring that users have access to fresh, modern designs. While it's hard to quantify how often updates occur, the consistent addition of new content keeps the platform relevant.
  • One-Stop-Shop for Branding: From apparel to digital mockups, logos, and even marketing materials, Placeit serves as a one-stop-shop for all your branding needs. This can simplify the branding process, making it easier to maintain a consistent look and feel across various platforms and materials.

Cons

  • Subscription Cancellation: Some users have reported that you can't cancel the subscription after one month, which could be a drawback for those looking for short-term usage.
  • Limited Customization: While Placeit offers a variety of templates, the customization options might be limited compared to more advanced design software.
  • Not Suitable for Complex Projects: Placeit is great for quick and simple projects, but it may not be the best choice for more complex design needs that require advanced features and functionalities.
  • Quality May Vary: Since the platform is designed for quick and easy use, the quality of the designs may not match up to those created by professional design software.
  • Costs Can Add Up: While the individual prices for templates and mockups may seem low, the costs can add up if you require multiple assets and don't opt for the unlimited subscription.

So, in all honesty, if you're looking for a more comprehensive solution, Envato Elements is the better choice. It offers a broader range of assets and is more aligned with the needs of a professional video editor or digital creator. Placeit, while excellent for mockups, doesn't offer the same level of versatility or quality in other areas, particularly logos.

Placeit Pricing

placeit unlimited subscription

Placeit offers three distinct pricing options, each with their unique advantages. The free plan is a good starting point for small projects. The unlimited subscription is cost-effective for regular design needs, and the a la carte option gives you the freedom to purchase only what you require.

Free Plan - How To Try It For FREE!

Cost: Absolutely $0
What's Included: In the free plan, you'll have access to over 1,000 ready-made logos, mockups, and graphics. (Mockups are digital representations of how your products would appear in real-world settings.)
Features: The dashboard is a key feature, allowing you to organize your projects, save items as favorites, and even make copies. Commercial use licensing is also included.
Who It’s For: Trust me, this is ideal for freelancers who want to add a touch of professionalism to their portfolio without spending a dime. Additionally, startup non-profits can benefit from this by creating basic promotional materials at no cost.

Unlimited Subscription

Cost: Monthly at $14.95 or annually at $89.69 (which comes down to $7.47/month).
What's Included: With the unlimited subscription, you gain unrestricted access to over 85,000 templates (Templates are pre-designed layouts that can be customized for your needs).
Features: You have the flexibility to downgrade or cancel at any time directly from your dashboard.
Who It's For: Frankly, digital agencies who need a plethora of design elements will find this option economical. For those running online educational platforms, this can serve as an all-in-one solution for creating course materials and promotional graphics.

Individual Purchases

Cost: Varies, but generally under $10 per item.

  • Logos: $9.95
  • Mockups: $7.95
  • Static Digital Designs: $2.95
  • Animations & Videos: $9.95
What's Included: Individual assets (such as a single logo or mockup), without the need for a subscription.
Who It's For: In my opinion, this is perfect for one-time event planners who just need a single, stunning logo or graphic. Or, for bloggers who sporadically require high-quality visuals but don’t need a monthly subscription.

Placeit Licensing Explained

Placeit's license is comprehensive yet straightforward, offering numerous liberties while setting reasonable boundaries. It's a model that other digital asset platforms could well emulate.

What You're Allowed to Do

  1. Commercial Use: This license unequivocally allows for commercial usage of the templates. You can turn these into products and sell them. Take it from me, it's a major advantage because many similar platforms have restrictions or require separate commercial licenses, often at exorbitant costs.
  2. Content Modification: You're free to add, alter, or modify the templates to create your final design. This flexibility is essential, especially if you're dealing with brand-specific guidelines or client needs.
  3. Distribution: You have the liberty to distribute your final designs via any channel—online or offline. This could mean using your design in a marketing campaign, social media, or even on broadcast media.
  4. Sell Products: Placeit permits you to place your final design on any type of product and sell it. Honestly, this is invaluable for businesses looking to diversify revenue streams.
  5. Client Work: You can even create designs for clients and charge for this service. Some platforms have a “one project per license” policy, but Placeit does not, making it cost-effective.
  6. Trademarks: Believe me, the ability to apply for trademarks on your unique designs is not a given in the world of digital assets. It offers you a chance for full ownership of the design, thus potentially eliminating future royalty or usage fees (fees you'd pay to continue using a design).

What You're Not Allowed to Do

  1. Template Reselling: You can't redistribute the Placeit templates as stock or in a tool/template. This is to prevent market saturation and plagiarism, essentially ensuring that the templates retain value.
  2. Surface Modifications: Making trivial changes and reselling the templates is prohibited. This ensures that the marketplace doesn’t get flooded with nearly identical designs.
  3. On-Demand Services: The license disallows you to offer the designs on a 'made to order' basis. In other words, you can't set up a service where you sell Placeit designs upon request, effectively acting as a reseller.

Additional Key Points

  • Unlimited Usage: Regardless of whether you opt for monthly or annual billing, the license covers unlimited commercial use. In the world of digital assets, where some platforms restrict usage based on metrics like print runs or web traffic, this is frankly a godsend.
  • Post-Cancellation Rights: If you cancel your subscription, you retain the rights to any designs you've created while your account was active. Many services revoke these rights upon cancellation, so this is definitely a plus.
  • Third-Party Brands: You can't imply partnerships with third-party brands unless explicitly authorized. This avoids legal complications that can arise from misuse of brand assets.

Placeit User Experience

If you've come this far into the review, you can already tell that I don't like Placeit. But here's what other users have to say:

Trustpilot Reviews

  • Overall Rating: 3.0 out of 5 based on 1,120 total reviews.
  • 5-star: 73%
  • 4-star: 10%
  • 3-star: 4%
  • 2-star: 2%
  • 1-star: 11%

Positive Experience

Placeit actually works just fine for those who need a quick mockup for a clothing brand, logo etc. If you're intending to use it for these purposes then that's completely fine and I couldn't recommend it to any further extent. Here are what some other users have to say:

"This site is THE BEST site to create and build excellent graphics, videos and much more. I have seen other sources like Canva but PlaceIT meet ALL my expectations. I am broadcaster for a Hispanic Internet Radio Network with a weekly program and I am fascinated with my new video promos which I post via social media. Thank you!"
"Excellent site and highly recommended for anyone looking to get into printing on demand. The template maker allows you to quickly and easily design with both free and paid graphics in seconds.
The site is user friendly making it super easy for even basic computer users."
"Great customer service. In fact surprisingly so! Being new to Placeit I have had several questions in regards to their layouts, importing images, etc. All questions were answered the very same day and quite often with an hour or so. Keep up the good work customer service. 5 Stars from Viacool."

Negative Experience

Another user had their account blocked within a month and was not given a reason for the block. However, they mentioned that Placeit promptly refunded their payment. Here are some other negative experiences customers have had:

"I have no idea who this company is and my card was charged $119 while I was asleep. Never heard of this company and do not know how my bank account was charged anything while I was asleep.

I have received your response but I have already done what you are suggesting before contacting you. The problem is that you all.have put me in a bad situation and I need my money back since I have no idea who these people are. The charge is from your company and I would appreciate having my money returned as you all are causing a serious financial hardship for me and then the number to your websites seems to.be fraudulent"
"With a paid subscription for a year, it would seem I could use the site. However, for some reason, suddenly, it's taking 15-30 minutes attempting to sign in as I can't get past multiple little idiotic pictures. Absolutely unusable. Save your money, save your blood pressure and frustration by AVOIDing this website at all costs.Run, don't walk, in the opposite direction."
"Their mockup pictures aren't high enough resolution for Etsy, even though Printify suggests using Placeit for mockups. You can still use them however, but you'll get a message saying the image isn't high enough resolution. Which is strange, because Placeit and Printify are both meant for use with Etsy. Secondly the model choice is abismal. If you're marketing to urban progressives who mainly are of color and/or alt lifestyles, you'll be fine. Go someplace else if you're looking to market to European Caucasians and who don't look so progressive/alternative. Will let me subscription run out at the end of the month."

I can't agree with some of these negative reviews, especially the last one. That particular user may have rendered their design incorrectly.

Customer Support

As a past user of several of Envato's products, I've already reached out to them several times for different inquires. Most of the time, their customer support team responds within a few days, but on other occasions I've been waiting for weeks, if not getting no response at all. That's just a personal experience of mine so I cannot say the same for others. Some customers have said that their customer support team instantly becomes more responsive after you leave a negative review, which kinda makes sense.

Placeit Alternatives & Competitors

Placeit is one of kind, but there are some similar websites that offer somewhat similar services.

Envato Elements

The first one which I recommend most is Envato Elements. Just note that you'll need a third party software such as After Effects, Photoshop or Lightroom to manually edit the assets from Elements.

both platforms are invaluable resources for professionals across diverse creative industries. To start, let's talk numbers: while Envato Elements boasts more than 1.3 million stock video clips, Placeit also offers an extensive library of customizable video mockups. The key advantage here is that with Placeit, customization is a breeze, allowing even those without video editing skills to create professional-looking clips.

Crello

I don't actually use Crello, but here are some of the similarities:

Cloud-Based Nature: Both Placeit and Crello operate on a cloud-based infrastructure. This is a game-changer for businesses that require seamless access to their design assets from multiple locations. The cloud-based model eliminates the need for physical storage and ensures that your data is secure and easily retrievable.

Template Library: Trust me, the extensive template libraries in both platforms are a lifesaver. Placeit, for instance, offers nearly 100,000 templates. These aren't just generic templates; they're highly specialized to fit a wide array of business needs, from social media marketing to product mockups.

User Experience: If you ask me, the user-friendly nature of both platforms is their strongest suit. Placeit is designed with an intuitive interface that even a novice can navigate effortlessly. This is crucial for businesses that may not have a dedicated design team but still require professional-grade designs.

Customization: Both platforms offer robust customization features. In Placeit, you can tweak virtually every element in a template. Whether it's the color scheme or the text layout, you have the freedom to make it uniquely yours. However, Placeit does lack some advanced features like layering and blending modes (these are techniques used in more advanced design software to manipulate images).

Business Orientation: Both platforms are tailored for businesses and entrepreneurs. Placeit offers specialized templates for various business needs, including but not limited to, logo creation and product mockups. This is invaluable for businesses looking to create a cohesive brand identity without hiring a full-time designer.

Media Elements: Placeit offers over 5,000 video assets and a similar number of premade logos. These are not just filler content; they are high-quality assets that can elevate your marketing campaigns.

Collaboration: While both platforms offer some form of collaboration, it's worth noting that Crello's collaboration is more team-focused. Placeit, on the other hand, is more geared towards individual users but still offers the flexibility to share your designs for feedback.

Unlimited Downloads: This is a feature that shouldn't be overlooked. Placeit offers unlimited downloads, allowing you to experiment with multiple design iterations without worrying about additional costs. This is particularly beneficial for businesses that require frequent updates to their marketing materials.

Canva

Both are similar but Canva is a more manual and customizable process.

Extensive Template Library: The template libraries in both Canva and Placeit are nothing short of impressive. Canva offers over 16,200 templates for presentations alone, while Placeit boasts nearly 100,000 templates for various digital assets. These aren't just run-of-the-mill designs; we're talking about high-quality, professionally crafted templates that can be a game-changer for your brand.

Ease of Use: You don't need a degree in graphic design to navigate these platforms. Both Canva and Placeit are designed with user-friendliness in mind. They employ intuitive interfaces that make it easy even for a novice to create stunning visuals. In a nutshell, if you can drag and drop, you can use these platforms.

Customization: Customization is where these platforms really shine. You bet, both Canva and Placeit offer extensive customization options. Canva allows you to import a variety of file types, including PDF and PSD, giving you more control over your designs. Placeit, on the other hand, lets you tweak every aspect of a template, down to the font and color schemes. (Fonts and color schemes are essential for maintaining brand consistency, which is crucial for brand recognition and trust.)

Mockups: If mockups are what you're after, then Placeit should be your go-to. While Canva does offer some mockup capabilities, Placeit provides over 30,000 mockup templates. That's not a typo—30,000. You can visualize your brand on everything from t-shirts to coffee mugs to mobile screens. Needless to say, this is incredibly useful for e-commerce businesses looking to showcase their products in real-world scenarios.

Subscription-Based: Both platforms operate on a subscription model, offering various plans to suit different needs. Canva's plans start at $9.95 per month, while Placeit's start at $14.95. However, the annual subscription for Placeit is $30 cheaper than Canva's. In any case, these subscriptions give you access to a treasure trove of premium features that are well worth the investment.

Online Platforms: Finally, let's face it, the cloud-based nature of these platforms is a massive advantage. Whether you're in the office or on the go, all you need is an internet connection to access your projects. This is especially beneficial for teams that are geographically dispersed, as it allows for real-time collaboration.
